Confounding the images.
I’d like to talk about Prince. He has been a sexual icon in societies eyes for generations. From the very first day that Prince stepped on stage he stunk of controversy. Whether they were scrutinizing his many hats or his explicit sexual content in his dancing. He was good at making love on stage. This confounded his audience into believing that everywoman was placed here for some sort of sexual gratification.
When the song Nikki came out, people around the world were astonished. It was argued that the lyrics were to vulgar for him to sing let alone preform. Yet Prince held back nothing as he made love to the microphone choosing the words to the song ever so carefully. I believe he made the lyric’s risky on purpose.
In the movie Purple Rain he confounded his audience even more. He presented himself as a young confused artist who had nothing or no one to turn to. A lot of the music that was on that label lead people to believe he was confused about his sexuality. He went even further to dress in very femine clothing. It is no surprise that Prince has found lots of success.
Prince shocked the nation in the early 90’s when he announced that he was gay. It came as a shock to most. For me the song “ When Doves Cry,” made perfect sense. Suddenly it all made sense to me.
There are many artist that confound their audience. These artist consist of Jeffery Star, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and even George Michael. These artist are guilty of trying to confuse the audience into believing they are one gender or the other. I understand their reasoning.
There are artist’s that work very hard to confound their audience’s, into believing that living as a thug or gangster is the thing to do. Such artist like 50 cent write raps everyday with lyric’s suggesting that life is better as a law breaking drug dealing thug. They graphically describe killing people, raping woman, saleing drugs, and having no regard for the laws that are placed in front of us. It’s these artist’s who benefit from the nation falling into their fantasy, spending large amounts money to satisfy their need. I feel that as a nation we need to stand up and tell someone. This needs to be addressed.
I further feel that you are only an artist when you describe things that you have actually experienced. The music that is made with the sole intention of making money is not music at all, it is more like fraud.
Though artist’s such as Prince were confounding all the way around as far as image is concerned, I have to hold an unspoken amount of respect for him, and the rest like him. They are fighting for a cause that is not harmful. They are inspiring and their music is touching. Unlike the other artist’s, who’s only concern is the dividend part of the deal. These are the artists who are truly confounding their audiences.
